Database Shared Resource (HICCC)

The central function of the Database Shared Resource (DBSR) of the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center is to provide oversight and infrastructure for the development and maintenance of cancer-related clinical databases and biobanks; to enable linkage to clinical data and tumor registry data through a secure portal; to procure and maintain a repository of human biological samples, clinical data and epidemiologic data for distribution to investigators while protecting the confidentiality of patients; integration of all prior adult solid tumor registries into one standardized protocol; development of a retrospective cohort of patients through linkage of data from electronic health records (EHRs) across multiple platforms and data warehouses (i.e., New York-Presbyterian Hospital [NYPH] Tumor Registry) with existing residual tissue samples; development and maintenance of a prospective cohort implemented through consenting, collecting biospecimens (e.g., blood, saliva) and epidemiologic data (e.g., lifestyle factors), and linking to data from the EHR/NYPH Tumor Registry and residual tissue samples; and to support and facilitate cancer research in the context of IRB and HIPAA regulations by articulating and implementing criteria allowing the acquisition, storage and distribution for research use of such data and specimens with or without linkage to personal health identifiers. DBSR also coordinates research database-related services with other Shared Resources. Directed by Dr. Katherine Crew, and co-directed by Dr. Jeanine Genkinger, the DBSR is located in the Herbert Irving Pavilion (HIP) in room 18-200 and the Allan Rosenfield Building (ARB) in the Mailman School of Public Health.
